"If I were again facing the challenge to integrate Europe, I probably would start with culture.”

—Jean Monnet, founder of the European Community

Welcome to Fifth Dimension Strategies

Fifth Dimension Strategies breaks down cultural differences and resolves cross-cultural conflicts in your business.

You will notice many different terms are used when talking about human cultures and international business. Do not let this confuse you. Whichever of these terms you use to describe your corporation, its business activities, and your workforce—International, Multinational, Transnational, Transcultural, Global, Multicultural, Cross-cultural, Repatriation, Expatriation—you interact with people of other cultures.

Yet, culture is often underestimated or even overlooked. When dealing internationally, most organizations diligently look at four dimensions: political, economic, legal, and technical, but it is the Fifth Dimension—Culture—that can make or break a deal.

We know communication is never perfect even in the best of situations. And communication among people of different cultures is a minefield of misperceptions, misinterpretations, and misevaluations.

Inattention to these cultural differences ultimately leads to conflict, project failure, decreased productivity, and increased costs. History shows that not understanding the impact of cultural differences on business frequently results in failure of international employees and global business alliances.

Since 1988 we at Fifth Dimension Strategies have been helping some of the largest U.S. corporations and smaller ones, too, with their cross-cultural communication issues.

Cross-cultural communication affects every aspect of business from one-on-one interactions, to managing a multicultural group in a U.S.-based organization to negotiating the formation of the European Union. Cross-cultural communication plays a major role in all forms of organizational behavior: for example, employee selection, reward systems, superior/subordinate relationships, group behavior, communication, leadership, and conflict levels.

You have a lot to deal with and very little time. Be prepared. Be cross-culturally competent.
